SPEECH BY MR RIZA ABDEEN, THE NEWLY ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE GROUP OF SIXTIES

Hon. Justice Saleem Marsoof - Immediate Past President of the Group of 60’,Al Haj Fouzul Hameed -Chairman Board of Governors & President of Zahira College Old Boys Association, Mr T.K.Azoor Principal Zahira College, Members of the Board of Governors, Officials & Members of the Group of 80, Group of 90, Parent Teachers Association, Past Prefects Association, Old Boys and Well wishers.

In electing me as the President of Group of Sixties, I feel deeply honoured and thank all members of the Group of Sixties for having placed their confidence in me. I must thank the Founder President Mr Samsudeen Macan Markar and the Immediate Past President Hon. Justice Saleem Marsoof  for having lead the Group of Sixties to be in a strong position and being able to carry out numerous projects for the benefit and development of Zahira.

I request the cooperation of all members of the Group of Sixties to carry on the task and also request the old boys of the Sixties to become members and join us to bring Zahira back to its former glory.

We as a group are committed for working for the betterment, progress and advancement of Zahira.  In particular one of our objectives is to assist the college on education and certain sports when such requests for assistance are made.  Our members work together on various projects mainly with the intention of raising funds so that we can in turn help the college.  Once such support is given we expect the college to use all its administrative, managerial and technical skills for the common objective of progress and development of Zahira.  We give an assurance that we will in no way interfere with the affairs of the College.

The recently concluded Rugby Sevens was a tremendous image booster for Zahira.  Likewise, the Gala Dinner recognizing the past Rugby National Players of Zahira, the musical show “Down Memory Lane”, 40 seater bus, Inter House Rugby and Cricket tournaments are other events that have helped the College in reviving certain sports which were in a dormant state.

In the field of education we are actively involved in providing scholarships for the deserving A Level students.  Last year we were successful in getting donors for 24 scholarships.  This year too we hope to get the same number.  In addition to this, the group assisted the College in GCE OL and AL seminars and for the future we have an intention of assisting the college in conducting revision classes by special tutors.

We have no doubt that all these efforts will bear fruit in the short and long term.  I am told that as a result of a general improvement in the image of Zahira, there is a severe demand seeking new admissions to the College.  This is one measure of the success of all the efforts of various groups and the College staff in working for the common objective of advancement of Zahira.

Gentlemen, let us work even harder to reach a higher level.

THANK YOU
